4. PULMONARY Flashcards
(12 cards)
what are the conducting zones comprised of?
zones 1-16
includes trachea and terminal bronchioles
What are the transitional and respiratory zones comprised of?
zone 17-23
includes bronchioles, alveolar ducts, and alveoli
What are the characteristics of alveoli?
- elastic
- thin walled
- surface for gas exchange
- pores of Kohn
what is Fick’s law of diffusion?
rate of transfer of a gas through a tissue is directly proportional to the partial pressure differential between the two sides, tissue surface area, a diffusion constant, and inversely proportional to the tissue thickness
dynamic lung volumes depend upon what 2 factors?
- maximal FVC of lungs
2. velocity of flow
what indicates primary airway capacity
FEV/FVC
how do obstructive diseases impact FEV?
significantly lower FEV
how do restrictive diseases impact FEV?
normal or above FEV, but the volume of air is decreased
Two ways to view ventilation:
- minute ventilation
2. alveolar ventilation
what is an anatomic dead zone?
structures of the
conducting zone that contains no alveoli
what is hyperventilation?
An increase in pulmonary ventilation that exceeds
O2 needs of metabolism
decreases pressure of CO2
what is dsypnea?
distress in breathing
