Q

Using Other Effects
We’ve covered EQ and compression in great detail in previous lessons. Before we leave the area of audio EFFECTS, let’s do a round-up of the __________ and how they might be useful for video work.

Using Other Effects
The first ________–Distortion–may seem more useful for guitar solos than video work. But it actually has its uses, as the presets at top indicate. Distortion clips an audio signal, perfect for creating unintelligible police radio sounds, old fashioned radios and telephones.
This is one of the rare occasions where the presets are immediately useful. Here we’ll apply a telephone preset to create the effect of hearing the person on the other end of a phone line.

Lesson 15: Using Other Effects
We’ve covered EQ and compression in great detail in previous lessons. Before we leave the area of AUDIO EFFECTS, let’s do a round-up of the CATEGORIES and how they might be useful for video work.
Echo, or Delay, is also fairly straightforward. If you have need to repeat a sound, Echo is the category for you.
Just be aware that there’s a significant limitation with delay effects in Final Cut Pro. The ____ of the effect doesn’t continue beyond the clip it’s applied to. You’ll need to make sure your clip lives long enough in the Timeline to hear the effect. You can help this by applying a SOLID.

Lesson 15: Using Other Effects
We’ve covered EQ and compression in great detail in previous lessons. Before we leave the area of audio effects, let’s do a round-up of the categories and how they might be useful for video work.
We’ve covered enough in the lesson on EQ that you should now understand the relative FUTILITY of using an EQ effect ____. Each audio situation is so unique, it makes the most sense to troubleshoot EQ on a clip-by-clip basis, rather than trusting a preset to solve it.

Q
Levels Adjusters
The Compressor (IN THE LEVELS CATEGORY) is the most important levels adjuster for general video work. You can also use Limiters though. Limiters \_\_\_\_ audio at a certain threshold instead of compressing it. It does so without distorting the signal. Limiters tend to sound more artificial than compressors, but are useful for preventing your final mix from distorting

The Spaces CATEGORY, however, is far more useful. Better known as ______, it adds that nice DECAY tail your hear from sounds in cathedrals and museums. Reverb actually occurs in all room types and sizes, its just more obvious in those larger spaces.

You can choose from multiple different room shapes, which will change the nature of the reverberation. Then choose an appropriate room size. But probably the most important control is the ______ ____, which will determine how long the reverb effect will last before petering out.

Reverb Time

Again, reverb suffers from the same issue as delay. The tail of the reverb doesn’t continue beyond the clip, so you’ll want to make sure you leave tail room at the end of the clip for the reverb to fade away (or add a _____ and combine the channels).

Space Designer
Space Designer is a far more sophisticated kind of reverb. It actually uses something called ___________ to recreate actual physical spaces from sound samples taken in a given venue.

A

CONVOLUTION

Space Designer
Space Designer is a far more sophisticated kind of reverb. It actually uses something called convolution to recreate actual physical spaces from sound samples taken in a given venue.
For example, you could actually capture an _______ of a space while on location, then use it to give your clips the same reverberation qualities as the original dialog. This is usually done in a session called ADR or Automated Dialog Replacement.

Which should you use? For most cases, select the appropriate preset from Space Designer and go with it. If you want to be able to adjust your reverb sound quickly and easily, you may prefer to use ____________ instead.

One of the more useful tools here is the __-_____. If you have a vocal performance where the actor’s mike was picking up a lot of hiss on his or her “S”s, the __-_____ will specifically compress just the high frequency sound of the “S”, without affecting the rest of the frequencies. As usual, be conservative when applying a __-_____, to keep your talent from ending up with a lisp.

You should now have a good overview of the most significant _______, and also a sense of how many options Final Cut Pro gives you for finessing the sound of your audio. In the next lesson we’ll look at adding Foley effects and music to your your projects.
