States Of Matter Flashcards
Identify the 3 states of matter. State one property for each.
Solid
- same size and shape regardless of container
- difficult to compress
Liquid
- fixed size, takes shape of container
Gas
- no fixed size, takes shape of container
Define diffusion
The process of gas particles moving around, taking up all available space.
Explain the particle model of matter
The model states that all matter is made of particles which are constantly moving, and are in one of 3 states
Distinguish between expansion and contraction
When a substance is heated, the particles move faster, becoming further apart and taking up more space, expanding. Contraction is when particles are cooked down, slowing an reding less space, becoming more attracted to each other.
Identify where expanding substances are useful
Mercury in thermometers is useful for telling temperature
What is matter?
Matter is anything that has mass or takes up space
