Chapter 3 Flashcards
What make molecules?
Two or more atoms.
3 states of matter.
Solid, liquid, gas
Crystalline
Geometric pattern of atoms/molecules with long-range, repeating order.
Amorphous
Patterns of molecules/atoms with no long-range order.
What state of matter is compressible?
Gas.
What is a pure substance?
Matter with only one type of molecule or atom.
What is a mixture?
Matter with two or more types of atoms or molecules.
What is an element?
A pure substance of one type of atom that can’t be broken down.
What is a compound?
A pure substance with two or more types of element.
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
A mixture with more than two types of molecules or atoms that doesn’t mix.
What is a homogeneous mixture?
A mixture with two or more types of atoms or molecules that has the same composition throughout.
What are the two properties that distinguish substances?
- Physical (doesn’t change the composition, just the appearance.)
- Chemical (does change the composition.)
What happens through a chemical reaction?
A chemical change.
Reactants
Substance present before a chemical reaction.
Product
The result of a chemical reaction.
