-Organs have antagonistic innervation from both SNS and PSNS

Exceptions:

  • PARASYMPATHETICS DONT GO TO THE BODY WALL!
  • Adrenal gland
  • Body Wall structures (arrector pili, sweat/seba. glands, vascular smooth muscle)

PSNS Uses CN X- VAGUS NERVE
- preganglionic cell bodies in brainstem nucleus
-Postganglionic cell bodies in INTRINSIC GANGLIA
(in/near walls of target organ)
-Innervates visceral organs of Thoracic and abdominal cavities up till the proximal 2/3 of the transverse colon

Pregang- S2-S4 “sacral parasympathetic nucleus”
- INTERMEDIATE ZONE in gray matter

Pregang- travel as pelvic splanchnic nerves
Postgang- Intrinsic ganglia
innervates everything past distal 1/3 of transverse colon
pelvic viscera

3 pathways for Sympathetic neurons:

Targets in body wall, thoracic viscera, pelvic viscera

A
  1. targets in body wall (arrector pili, vascular sm, sweat/sebaceous glands)- synapse in paravertebral ganglion then rejoin spinal nerve
  2. targets in thoracic viscera (heart/lungs)- synapse in paravertebral ganglion then form cardiopulmonary splanchnic nerves
  3. Targets in abdominal/pelvic viscera (gi, urogenital)
    - pregang exit paravertebral ganglion and form abdominopelvic splanchnic nerve then synapse in prevertebral ganglion- post gang follow arteries to target
