4.2 Data Transmisson Flashcards
(4 cards)
Bandwidth
A measure of how much data can fit ont a transmission medium at one time, not a measure of speed
Essentially a 1Mbit/s connection means every second, 1 Mbit is passed down the cable (or any other transmission medium)
Bit Rate
Describes the data requirments of an application over time. High bit rate means large amount of data needs to be sent in a short time
The Internet
A world wide communications infrastructure made up of networks. These networks use TCP/IP and are connected using hardware (routers, bridges, gateways) and connection mediums (like fibre optic cable).
The WWW is not the same as the internet. The WWW is the information sharing, hyperlink technology and the internet is the connection technology.
Low/High bit rate applications
Sending a text based email - low bit rate - emails tend to be few KB in size
Streaming video conference - high bit rate - vide sends a lot of data per second depending on quality
FIle server - high bit rate - lots of request for files and processing them fast, higher bit rate means less time to send each file
Browsing the web - low bit rate - webpages tend to be small, data is sent out over a period of time
