What is a Social Value?
Rules that are shared by most people in culture, or the ideas they hold in value.
Most people feel that the elderly should be respected, and that seats should be surrendered for the less able on public transport
What is a Norm?
A norm is a social expectation that that guides behavior and explains why people act in the way that they do. The social expectation varies from one way to another- for instance, funeral colours in the UK is black whereas China, the colour is white.
What is a More?
Morals or good ways of behaving- Norms that a culture would think as too serious to break, such as murder or sexual offences.
Two examples of social changes affecting policy development:
Smoking, Women’s’ rights, Gay rights
Key points in the changing views of Homosexuality:
Death Penalty for Homosexuality removed in 19th century
1967- Homosexuality decriminalised
Consent lowered to 18 by Crim Justice and Public order Act- 1994
Lowered to 16 by the sexual offences amendment act of 2000 to be equal with heterosexual laws
