4.2- Solubility & Saturation Flashcards
(12 cards)
Solubility definition
Amount of solute that can dissolve in a given quantity of solvent(usually water)
-depends on temperature and pressure
What are the degrees of saturation?
- Saturated solution
- Unsaturated solution
- Supersaturated solution
Saturated solution definition
Contains the maximum amount of dissolved solute at a specific temperature
Unsaturated solution definition
More solute can be dissolved at a specific temperature
Supersaturated solution definition
Contains more dissolved solute than expected at a specific temperature
- achieved by changing pressure and temperature
- when unstable solute will often crystallize out of solution
Solubility curves definition
Shows the solubility of a solute in a specific solvent over a range of temperatures
Explain thermal pollution
-release of excess thermal energy into water
-Lowers O2 levels in water since it is less soluble at warmer temps which affects aquatic organisms
- Comes from manufacturing and power plants that need water for cooling
Pressure definition
Force applied per unit area
Effective pressure on solubility on solids/liquids
Little effect because not very compressible
Effective pressure on solubility on gases
-significantly affected
-solubility of a gas and a liquid increases as the pressure of the gas is increased
Common solubility trends in ionic compounds
Solubility tends to increase with rising temperatures
Common solubility trends with gases
Solubility decreases with rising temperatures
