what is an observation?
the action or process of closely monitoring something or someone
what is naturalistic observation?
observing behaviour in the environment in which it typically occurs
what is structured/controlled observation?
observing specific behaviours in a structured setting (could be conducted in a natural setting eg. classroom but have structured this in some way eg. introducing a specific task)
what is participant observation?
when the researcher becomes an active participant in the group or situation they are observing
what is a non-participant observation?
when the researcher doesn’t take part in the research and instead observes behaviour as an outsider looking in
what is covert observation?
when the participant is unaware that they are being observed
what is overt observation?
when the participant is aware that they are being observed and has provided consent
