Mass
A measure of how much matter is in an object. Independent of gravity.
Weight
A measure of gravity’s pull on you. Depends on gravity.
Chemical Properties
Properties that describe how a substance reacts with other things.
Physical Properties
Properties that use our senses to detect. What things look like physically.
Chemical Change
Occurs when a substance comes across something else. (Not the same before and after) transfer of energy, a change in color, the production of a gas, or the formation of a precipitate.
Physical Change
The same material but in a different form.
Reversible or irreversible
Element
A pure substance that cannot be broken down any further.
Compound
Pure substance made of two or more different elements bonded together, with a formula.
Solution
A combination of two or more substances. It is the same throughout, and there is no fixed formula.
Mixture
A combination
Extensive Property
Property that changes when the size of the sample changes. Ex. Mass, volume, weight
Intensive Property
Property that doesn’t depend on size. Ex. color, hardness, density
Solid
Not fluid
Liquid
Freely flowing but of constant volume
Gas
Airlike fluid substance that which expands freely to fill any space.
