Endocrine System Flashcards
Caused by a tumor or excess growth of the pituitary gland
Cushing Disease
Characterized by progressive anemia, low blood pressure, weakness and bronze discoloration of the skin.
Addison’s Disease
Inadequate secretion of hormones by the adrenal cortex
Addison’s Disease
Caused by an adenoma. Excessive growth hormone in childhood.
Gigantism
Benign, slow-growing tumors that arise from cells in the pituitary gland
Adenoma
Presence of glucose in the urine or abnormal amount of sugar in the urine
Glycosuria
Abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. Lack of iodine in the diet
Goiter
Abnormally low blood glucose levels. Referred as an insulin reaction or insulin shock
Hypoglycemia
Congenital hypothyroidism which results in growth retardation, developmental delay and abnormal features. Deficiency of iodine in the mother’s diet
Cretinism
High blood glucose. Too little insulin or when body can’t use insulin properly
Hyperglycemia
Multisystem autoimmune disorder by hyperthyroidism. Over production of thyroid hormone.
Graves Disease
Characterized by exophthalmos and diffuse goiter
Graves disease
Excessive distribution of blood hair. Caused by abnormalities of androgen production or metabolism
Hirsutism
Congenital lack of thyroid secretion and marked by arrested physical and mental development. Also called congenital hypothyroidism
Infantile Hypothyroidism
Excessive accumulation of fat. Due to excessive intake of food or metabolic or endocrine abnormalities
Obesity
