Apa sudah lama...?
Ask whether something has been the case for a long time.
Sudah lama (E.G. Apa sudah lama tinggal di Melbourne? Ya, sudah lama)
Positive response - length of time is long. (Have you lived in Melbourne long? Yes I have (and still currently living))
Belum lama (E.G. Apa sudah lama tinggal di Jakarta? Belum, saya belum lama tinggal di sini)
Negative response. (Have you lived in Jakarta long? No, I haven't lived here long).
Sudah + time (E.G. Sudah lama menikah? Ya, sudah lama. Sudah tiga puluh tahun)
Lengths of time perceived as long. (Have you been married long? Yeah, it's been 30 years)
Baru + time (E.G. Sudah lama menikah? Belum, belum lama. Baru dua minggu)
Short lengths of time (have you been married long? No I haven't, it's been two weeks).
Sudah berapa lama...? (E.G. Sudah berapa lama berkerja Bahasa Indonesia?)
Asks about the length of time the verb had been in effect up to the time of speaking. Answer with 'sudah+time' or 'belum+time'. (Have you learnt Indonesian long?)
