1. Task is broken down into simple components
2. The training starts with simple tasks with a high likelihood of success
3. Increasingly difficult tasks are added, but at each level prompts cues and guided instructions are used until a high level of proficiency is attained
4. Performance at each level is over learned using repetitive, successful practice and positive reinforcement
