1. The water collects in cracks in rocks

2. Temperatures drop to 0 degrees Celsius by night, the water freezes. The water expands while frozen and widens the cracks and puts a strain on the rock
3. Eventually freezing and thawing occur so frequently that the rock is gradually split and broken up
