Organelles Flashcards

1
Q

What is the function of the nucleus?

A

Chromatin is made out of DNA and proteins, the pores allow substances to move in between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. The nucleolus makes ribosomes.

Q

What is the description of mitochondrion?

A

Oval shaped with a double membrane, inner membranes which fold to form cristae. Inside is the matrix there are enzymes for respiration.

Q

What is the description of chloroplasts?

A

A small flattened structure in plant cells, it has a double membrane and membranes inside called thylakoids membranes which stack up to form grana linked by lamellae.

16
Q

What is the description of the cell wall?

A

It is a rigid structure around the plant cell, made from cellulose.

17
Q

What it the function of the cell wall?

A

To support the plant cell.

18
Q

What is the description of the vacuole?

A

A fluid filled sac with a single membrane, there is usually one large vacuole in plant cell. It contains salts, sugars, amino acids, wastes and pigments.

19
Q

What is the function of the vacuole?

A

Supports herbaceous plants and part of woody plants by making them turgid, the sugars and amino acids act as a temporary food store. The pigments colour petals.

20
Q

What is the description of the nucleus?

A

A large organelle with a nuclear envelope (double membrane) which contains chromatin and often a nucleolus.
