Q

Molarity

A

Expresses the concentration of a solution as the number of moles of solute in a liter of solution

Molarity = moles solute/volume of solution in liters
1 molar solution (1 M) contains 1 mol of solute per liter of solution

Q

Expressing concentration of an electrolyte

A

relative concentrations of ions in the solution depend on the chemical formula of the compound when an ionic compound dissolves

Concentration of an electrolyte solution can be specified either in terms of the compound used to make the solution (1 M Na2SO4) or in terms of the ions that the solution contains (2M Na(+) and 1 M SO4(2-))

Q

Inter-converting molarity, moles and volume

A

Molarity, moles solute, and liters of solution -if 2 are known, the 3rd can be found

M = mol solute/liters soln (just do converstions etc)

Q

Dilution

A

lowering the concentration by adding water
2 equations:

Mols solute before dilution = Mols solute after dilution
Mol(conc)V(conc) = Mol(dil)V(dil)
