Q

How does epoc work?

A

1) resting heart rate
2) exercise commences and the body works anaerobically because of insufficient o2 and fats are too slow break down. Both anaerobic systems are used
3) when sufficient o2 becomes available the body works aerobically and enters the stead state
4) when exercise stops, o2 intake remains high so the body returns to its pre-exercise state
5) recovery can only take place in presence of oxygen

Q

What happens in stage 1 of epoc?

A
  • fast replenishment (2-3 mins)
    1) restoration of ATP
    2) restoration of Pc stores
    3) resaturation of myoglobin with o2
  • uses 4 liters

Q

What happens in stage 2 of epoc?

A
  • slow replenishment (up to 2 hours)
    1) removal of lactic acid
    2) maintained elevated heart rate and breathing rate
    3) replenishment of muscle glycogen stores
  • uses up to 5-10 liters

Q

How can lactic acid be removed?

A
  • back into pyruvate acid (reverse of glycolysis)
  • turned back into glycogen in the lover by the coricycle
  • converted into glucose
