4.6- Biodiversity Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is meant by biodiversity
The range of living organisms
What is meant by species diversity
The number of species in a community
Why is protecting biodiversity important
To prevent extinction of species, to save organisms for future generations, because some species may be useful for medicine, because some species may be useful for agriculture, because some species may be useful in making specific products, because some species may attract tourists
What is an index of diversity
A measure of biodiversity which takes into account the number of species in the community and the number of individuals in each species
What is the difference between species richness and index of diversity
Species richness measures only number of different species/does not measure number of individuals
Why is index of diversity more useful than species in the richness of a measure of biodiversity
Also measures number of individuals in a species, this is important because some species may be only present in very low numbers and other species may be present in very high numbers
How does clearing woodland affect biodiversity
Decrease in variety of plant species, if you are habitats/wishes, decrease in variety of food sources, decrease in nesting sites, decrease in variety of animal species that can live there
How does planting hedges around feels affect biodiversity
Increased variety of plants, increased variety of food sources, monoecious, increased variety of herbivore animal species that can live there, increased variety of carnivore animal species that can live there
How does growing monocultures i.e. fields with just one crop been grown in them affect biodiversity
Decrease in biodiversity because only one species of plant is grown, herbicides are used to kill other plants
How does removing hedges affect biodiversity
Removes species/types of plant/insect, fewer food sources, you are habitats/nieces nieces niece
What is the formula for index diversity
D=N(N-1) divide by sum of n(n-1)
