Rotavirus

A

Viral gastroenteritis

Contaminated food/water –> infect enterocytes of the small intestine - induce vomiting, diarrhea, chills

Deadly in children –> 500,00 deaths world wide each year

Two vaccines - RotaTeq, Rotarix

Often occurs during winter

Norovirus

A

Common cause of viral gastroenteritis in adults

Transmission: fecal/oral, person to person, contaminated objects

Rapidly spread –> highly contagious

Recent outbreak on cruise ships

Leads to dehydration

Often in summer

A

Viral gastroenteritis

Coxsackie virus = Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease

Common in young children, esp in summer

Symptoms: fever, malaise, sore throat, rash on palms of hands and soles of feet

Hepatitis A (HAV)

A

Transmitted through GI tract
Transmitted from contaminated food/water –> raw oysters: filter and concentrate virus from contaminated sea water

Acute inflammatory disease of the liver

  • enlargement of liver
  • jaundice

Vaccine: Havrix, Vaqta (if traveling)

Treatment: none
