Classification Flashcards
The division of organisms into groups, or classes based on specific characteristics.
Classification
The science of describing, naming, and classifying organisms.
Taxonomy
Taxonomic category of the highest rank, grouping together all forms of life having certain fundamental characteristics in common.
Kingdom
Primary subdivision of a taxonomic kingdom, grouping together all classes of organisms that have the same body plan.
Phylum
Taxonomic group comprised of organisms that share a common attribute.
Class
Taxonomic rank used in classifying organisms, generally below the class, and compromised of families sharing a set of similar nature or character.
Order
Taxonomic rank in the classification of organisms between genus and order.
Family
Taxonomic category ranking used in biological classification that is below family and above a species level, and includes groups of of species that are structurally similar and phylogenetically related.
Genus
Lowest taxonomic rank , and the most basic unit or category of biologically classification.
Species
A kingdom that is make up of complex, multi-cellular organisms that lack cell walls, can usually move-around, and quickly respond to their environment.
Animalia
Animals in this group have a hollow nerve chord and most have a back bone.
Chordata
Animals in this group are mammals who have backbones and nurse their young.
Mammalia
A type of mammal characterized by opposable thumbs and binocular vision.
Primate
A type of primate characterized by bipedalism, relatively long lower limbs, and lack of tail.
Hominid
A taxonomy which is a system of classifying and naming organisms.
