Chapter 7 Flashcards
Nerovus system
Master controlling and communicating system
Sensory input
Information gathered by stimuli
Integration
A process that makes decisions based on the sensory input
Central nervous system
Brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system
Part of nervous system outside of the CNS
Afferent
Nerve fibers that convey impulses to the CNS
Efferent
Carries impulses from CNS to Muscles and glands (efferent organs)
Somatic nervous system
Allows concious control of skeletal muscles
Autonomic nervous system
Regulates involuntary events, such as cardiac muscle
Neuroglia
Provide support and protection to neurons
Astrocytes
Star shaped cells that make up almost half of the neural tissue
Microglia
Spiderlike phagocytes that dispose of debris
Ependymal
Glial cells that line cavaties of the brain and spinal cord
Oligodendocrytes
Glia that wrap flat extentions tightly around nerve fibers
Schwann cells
Form living barrier between neurons and capillaries in CNS
