What is a storm surge?

A

A storm surge is a change in sea level where the water level is higher than the usual high tide caused by:

  • Strong winds
  • high waves occuring at the same tide as high tide
  • Low atmospheric pressure

What were the causes of the East Anglia flood?

A
  • Area of low atmospheric pressure passing the north coast of the UK, causing the sea level to rise.
  • Southward blowing winds that caused large waves to build leading to flooding at high tide
  • A combination of high spring tides, storm surge , winds and very large waves
