Breathing And Respiration Flashcards

1
Q

Organ system

A

An organ system is lots of organs working together to carry out a particular process
E.g- Reproductive, digestive system, circulatory, nervous, respiratory, skeletal, excretory, immune.

Aerobic

A

Aerobic processes eg respiration use the oxygen that is in air

Q

Digestive system

A

This is responsible for getting the glucose into our bodies.

Q

Respiratory system

A

This is responsible for oxygen entering our bodies and carbon dioxide leaving. It consists of the lungs and many tubes.

Q

Alveoli

A

Alveoli are the small air sacs at the end of the bronchioles, where gas exchange occurs

Q

Thorax

A

The thorax is the chest cavity, and contains the heart and lungs. It is separated from the digestive system by a sheet of muscle called the diaphragm.

Q

Abdomen

A

The abdomen is below the thorax and contains the stomach, intestines and other digestive organs.

Q

Trachea

A

Also called the wind pipe, it is the start of the respiratory tubes. It is held open by rings of cartilage.

Q

Bronchus

A

There are two of these leading off from the trachea, and going to each lung.

Q

Bronchioles

A

These are small branches coming off the bronchi and ending in an alveolus.

Q

Pleural membranes

A

These are two thin membranes that line the inside of the rib cage, and surround each lung. There is a pleural fluid between them which lubricates the inside of the lungs preventing them getting damaged by the rib cage

Q

Ventilation

A

Is the movement of air in and out of the lungs by breathing in and out (inhalation and exhalation)

16
Q

Intercostal muscles

A

These are the muscles between the ribs, that help move the rib cage

17
Q

Volume

A

The amount of space within the lungs

18
Q

Pressure

A

The pressure is the force exerted by the air in the confined space of the lungs

19
Q

When we inhale

A

diaphragm moves down, and the rib cage moves up and out

20
Q

When we exhale

A

diaphragm moves up, and the rib cage moves down and in

21
Q

Concentration

A

The amount of oxygen or carbon dioxide within the alveoli.

22
Q

Diffusion

A

Diffusion is the movement of gases or liquids from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, down a concentration gradient. This does not require energy.

23
Q

Asthma

A

Asthma is when you have difficulty breathing. You can make a wheezy sound and it develops because the bronchial tubes are swollen or inflammed.

24
Q

Respiration

A

Respiration is a chemical reaction resulting in the release of energy from glucose and oxygen

25
Q

Ventilation in humans

A

Movement of air through nose or mouth, down trachea, through bronchi/bronchioles and into alveoli of lungs

26
Q

How are the lungs separated from the lower part of the body (abdomen)?

A

Muscular diaphragm

27
Q

Glucose

A

Our main fuel. We get it from the food we eat

28
Q

Aerobic word equation

A

Glucose + oxygen —-> carbon dioxide + water + energy

29
Q

Circulatory system

A

Carries small food molecules + oxygen to every cell in our body and rids waste

30
Q

Energy

A

Cells and plants use this
