How common is stalking?

A

18.1% of women: 9.4% of men (aged 16 – 59) report stalking since aged of 16.

Stalking common type of intimate partner violence: 4.1% of women, 3.2% of men in the last year. (Home Office Statistical Bulletin, 2009/2010)

Nationwide: 25% increase in stalking charges in 2014. UP 33% since 2012. = 13, 348 charges given out in England, Wales & N. Ireland

Who Stalks?

A

80-90% stalkers are male, approx. 80% victims are female. This ration changes when considering cyberstalking; around 40% victims males (Maple et al., 2011).

Women more likely to be stalked by men (up to 98%). 1 in 3 men stalked by other males.

Classifying Stalkers

  • Rejected
  • Resentful
  • Intimacy Seekers - establish intimate relationship with the victim.
  • Incompetent suitor - To establish contact in the hope of a friendship or sexual relationship.
    They are either indifferent or blind to the disinterest or distress of the victim.
  • Predatory
