Module 6: Amino Acids and Proteins Obj. 5 Flashcards

1
Q

Deamination process, starting and ending substances

A

amino acid converted to its corresponding alpha-keto acid plus ammonia
Takes place in liver and renal tubular cells

ex. glutamine = glutamic acid + ammonia

Q

Transamination process, starting and ending substances

A

transfer of an amino group from an amino acid to an alpha-leto acid thereby creating a new amino acid and a new alpha-keto acid

Reaction catalyzed by aminotransferases and require pyridoxal-5-phosphate as the coenzyme
