In it,
-pardons all confederates who swear allegiance to the union.
- after 10% of a state votes yes to the bill, they are re admitted to the union.
-Lincoln believed that states leaving the union was constitutionally impossible

A

The goals of the KKK were to restore white supremacy, and to boot out the republicans.
They dressed up as the ghosts of confederate soldiers and scared ex slaves.
These quickly turned to violent riots led by the grand dragon.

How did the Supreme Court decisions of the 1870s affect the African American’s pursuit of civil rights?

A

Slaughterhouse cases : civil rights were state matters not federal and were unprotected by the 14th amendment,
U.S. Vs Cruikshank: the 14th amendment was ruled to not grant the government power to punish whites who oppressed blacks.
U.S. Vs Reese : the 15th amendment does not grant voting rights to anyone, but merely outlaws voting discression

How did the Compromise of 1877 and other factors of the 1870s bring about the end of Reconstruction?

A

president Hayes removes remaining troops from the South to end Reconstruction and passes an act. This returned a lot of power back to the democrats and it seemed as if things were back to normal. The republicans focused on the economic crisis and other matter of that sort and kinda just lost interest in the reconstruction. These factors ended it.

A

The republicans were pro government and equal rights for all. They were originally in the north but migrated to the south due to the reconstruction. Democrats were anti government and pro state rights with progressive beliefs. Originally in south but moved north. The elephant and donkey were created by cartoonist Thomas Nast.
