Andersonville and Elmira

Prisoners slept on ground, ate a teaspoon of salt, 3 tablespoons of beans, and a cup of cornmeal a day. Drank water from stream that was also a sewer. Thousands died of disease
Andersonville was Confederate

Elmira was Union
It was in New York
Prisoners had no blankets or warm clothes even in winter

Camps were crowded places and drinking water was dirty
As many as 1/2 of the men got sick and died

Angry. Said rich people planned war but only poor people had to fight. Riots occurred in several northern cities

A

Births economy did better due to their Industry. farming profited for north. Goods were in high demand. Prices grew faster than wages b/c goods were in high demand. This increase in prices is called inflation

South farms and railroads were destroyed because most battles took place there. Blockade stopped shipping. Important supposed couldn’t reach Confederacy. Riots due to not enough food in Atlanta, Richmond and other cities. South suffered worse inflation
