Q
Define the first ionisation energy
A
The first ionisation energy is the energy required to remove one electron from each atom in one mole of gaseous atoms of an element to form one mole of gaseous +1 ions
2
Q
What are the three factors which impact the ionisation energy?
A
Atomic radius- the larger the distance between the nucleus and the outer electrons, the less attraction between them
Nuclear charge- the more protons there are in the nucleus the stronger the attraction between the nucleus and the outer electrons
Electron shielding- electron repulsion reduces the attraction between the nucleus and the outer electrons
