4a The Organism in the Environment Flashcards
(12 cards)
1
Q
What is an ecosystem?
A
- All the organisms (living things) and physical factors (non living things) in a self contained area
- eg. foxes, birds, oak tree, grass, soil pH
2
Q
What is a community?
A
- All of the different living organisms that live in a habitat
- eg. foxes, birds, oak tree, grass
3
Q
What is population?
A
- A group of organisms of the same species, living in the same place/habitat at the same time
- eg. the number of foxes living in the same habitat
4
Q
What is a habitat?
A
- The place where an organism lives
5
Q
What are some physical factors?
A
- Amount of Rainfall
- Light intensity
- Temperature
- pH of the soil
6
Q
What are some biological factors?
A
- Competition for food and water
- Number of predators
- Competition for nesting sites
7
Q
What are some natural ecosystems?
A
- Woodland
- Lake
- Sea
8
Q
What are some artificial ecosystems?
A
- Greenhouse
- Fish Farm
- Fish Tank
9
Q
What is a sweepnet?
A
- Are nets attached to sticks. They are used to collect insects in long grass or moderately dense woodland where there are lots of shrubs
10
Q
What is a quadrat?
A
- Are square frames that have sides 0.5m long. You throw them randomly on the ground, then count and record the number of each species. You can then estimate the population of each species in a given area
11
Q
What is a pooter?
A
- Are containers used to collect insects easily, without harming them
12
Q
What is a pitfall trap?
A
- Are containers set in the ground that are used to catch small insects eg. beetles
