4th Qtr EXAM Flashcards
(38 cards)
a two-dimensional graphical representation of the Earth.
Map -
- a three-dimensional spherical model of the Earth.
Globe
- system that is used to locate places using degrees of latitude and longitude.
Latitude is stated first when indicating a location.
Geographic Coordinate System
horizontal imaginary lines that run from east to west of a
map or globe.
Latitudes:
divides the northern hemisphere and southern
hemisphere.
Equator:
Countries in this zone experience a tropical climate, with two
seasons: dry and wet seasons.
TROPICS -
Countries located in these zones experience cold
temperatures all year round.
POLAR/FRIGID ZONES -
- Countries in these
zones experience four seasons.
NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN TEMPERATE ZONE
vertical imaginary lines that run from north to south
of a map or globe.
Longitudes -
divides the western hemisphere and
eastern hemisphere.
Prime meridian:
a specific point on Earth’s surface defined by coordinates like latitude and longitude.
Absolute Location -
place’s position in relation to other landmarks or features.
Relative Location -
uses the bodies of water.
Insular Location -
made up of a group or chain of islands surrounded by bodies of water.
Archipelago -
Layers of the atmosphere
Troposphere
stratosphere
mesosphere
thermosphere
exosphere
this is where weather occurs and clouds are formed.
Troposphere – (1st
layer)
contains ozone layer which absorbs and filters UV radiation.
Stratosphere – (2nd
layer)
contains the mesopause, the coldest point in the Earth’s atmosphere. Meteor burn in
this layer, letting us witness meteor showers.
Mesosphere – (3rd
layer)
contains ionosphere, displaying northern and southern lights.
Thermosphere – (4th
layer)
) is the outermost layer of the atmosphere. Satellites and space stations orbit within this
layer.
Exosphere – (5th
layer
changes in the climate that will last for a long period.
Climate Change -
it is a phenomenon when the atmosphere keeps a larger amount of heat than it should.
Global Warming -
plays a crucial role in climate change by trapping heat in the Earth’s atmosphere and
contributing to the greenhouse effect.
Greenhouse Effect -
winds that are evident near bodies of water.
Breezes -
