4th quarter Flashcards
(26 cards)
This pertains to the assignment of burden to third party like insurance companies
RISK TRANSFER
These elements comprise aspects of geography, location, place, and physical structures like
infrastructures. As to geography, location, and place, researches show that developing countries face a
greater impact on disaster than developed countries due to the population, human health, public
services, quality of infrastructures, and others
PHYSICAL ELEMENTS
is the addition of new technology or features to older systems.
RETROFITTING
these are hazards that resulted
from natural processes and
interventions of human activities
QUASI-NATURAL HAZARD
an event that causes a great deal of damage, destruction, or personal distress.
CALAMITY
a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society involving widespread human, material, economic or environmental losses and impacts, which exceeds the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its resources.
DISASTER
pertains to anything that disrupts the normal
functioning of people, events, and circumstances. It may either be
predicted or unpredicted.
DISASTER
the process of identifying a
potential threat, determining the possibility of its
occurrence, and appraising its possible effect
HAZARD ASSESSMENT
- Is the process of identifying localities that are in
danger of natural disasters like earthquakes, ground
subsidence, tsunami, and flash floods. - is important as it serves as notice to those who
would want to build houses or infrastructures in a particular area.
HAZARD MAPPING
pertain to natural resources or the
misuse of public lands and waterways.
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
is the number of people, property, systems or other elements present in hazard zones that are thereby subject to potential losses.
EXPOSURE
The flow of lahar and the accent of
magma are the two most
distressing effects of volcanic
eruptions.
VOLCANIC ERUPTION
- refers to anything which may be a source of
probable damage to man, animals, and properties. - a dangerous phenomenon, substance, human activity, or condition that may cause loss of life,
injury or other health impacts, property damage, loss of livelihoods and services, social and economic
disruption, or environmental damage. - A THREAT
HAZARD
those which resulted
from other hazard events.
For instance, an earthquake occurs and as a
result of which, a building collapsed, a dam
failed, tsunami and landslide occurred.
SECONDARY HAZARD
Which occur as the consequence of the hazard itself
PRIMARY EFFECTS
Effects are the result or outcome of the primary effects of hazards
SECONDARY EFFECT
Are long-term effects because of a primary event
TERTIARY EFFECT
CLASSIFICATION OF HAZARDS
- NATURAL HAZARDS
- QUASI-NATURAL HAZARDS
- TECHNOLOGICAL HAZARDS
2 TYPES OF HAZARDS

4 TIPS IN BUILDING DISASTER-SAFE HOUSES
- Consult engineers and architects.
- Install disaster-resistant designs in your houses
- Use the right materials.
- Identify the right location for your home.
