5. Cerebral Cortex and Cortical Localization Flashcards
(24 cards)
Function of Frontal Lobe
Controls movement and speech
Function of Parietal Lobe
important for sensory perception and sight, touch, hear smell, taste
Function of Primary motor cortex
it generates signals to direct the movement of the body
Function of Primary somatosensory cortex
role in processing afferent somatosensory input and contributes to the integration of sensory and motor signals necessary for skilled movement
Function of Occiptal lobe
important in sight and color processing
Function of visual cortex
visual processing and voluntary eye control
Function of Brocas area
Important in speech formation
Function of Wernicke’s Area
important in understanding speech
Function of temporal lobe
it helps with processing auditory information and with the encoding of memory
Function of Auditory cortex
receives and processes the contents of sounds, voices, or music
Function of sensory homunculus
map along the cerebral cortex of where each part of the body is processed
Function of motor homunculus
a map of brain areas dedicated to motor processing for different anatomical divisions of the body
Describe the importance of REM sleep and the normal distribution of REM sleep within the sleep cycle
its important because without it it could cause dysfunction. it happens about 4-6 time per night (typical 8 hour sleep)
Describe Consciousness
The state of being aware
Describe Dementia
loss of cognitive functioning
Describe Confusion
inability to think as clearly or quickly as you normally do.
Describe Stupor
A state of impaired consciousness that can be aroused only by continual stimulation
Describe Coma
A state of profound unconsciousness from which one cannot be roused.
Describe the criteria with which a person might be declared “brain dead”
permanent loss of cerebral and brain stem function, absence of stimuli and reflex as well.
List 4 common causes of headache
Tension
eye disorder
inflammation
swelling of sinuses
Describe what a migraine is
headache associated with visual disturbance
List the symptoms of a possible stroke
-Face, is it drooping?
-Arms, can you raise both?
-Speech, is it slurred or jumbled?
Describe the possible benefit of tPA administration
helps to restore blood flow to brain regions affected by a stroke, thereby limiting the risk of damage and functional impairment, if it is applied in the 4.5 hours window
Describe merits of using CT,MRI,PET techniques to image the brain
-CT: preferred method for detecting bleeding in the brain
-MRI-preferred imaging technique for brain tumours and all spinal imaging
-PET: shows the levels of glucose metabolism
