Schizophrenia prognostic variables
1% of population
Positive symptoms - less ominious
Negative symptoms - poor prognosis (along with poor cognitive performance, poor support, younger onset, insidious onset, premorbid-schizoid,schizotypal, few friends, minimal social activities)
Precipitating events in schizophrenia
psychosocial stressors, traumatic events, drug and alcohol abuse, (cannabis incr. 6x risk)
MoA of schizophrenia
Increased dopamine in neuronal tracts, blocking pathways.
Increased 5HT, NE.
Decreased GABA and glutamate.
Features of schizophrenia: describe.
- Form of thought - loosening associations, poverty of content and speech, thought blocking (talk nonstop and then STOP)
- Content of thought - delusions
- Perceptual disorders - hallucinations (what type?)
- Affect
loosening of associations - connections among ideas are absent/obscure
hallucinations - auditory or visual
affect - blunted/flat/inappropriate
describe four positive symptoms associated with schizophrenia
delusions, hallucinations, catatonia, agitation

affective flattening, apathy, social withdrawl, anhedonia, pverty of thought, content of speech
Describe DSM5 dx of schizophrenia
**Time frame?
2 or more sx for most of 1 mon5h of: delusions, hallucinations, disorganzied speech, grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior, negative symptoms. **Duration of at least 6mo of persistent symptoms.
What three actions should be taken in a hospital if a schizophrenic is violent/has hx of violent acts.
RESTRAINTS, then IM lorazepam or haloperidol (anti psychotics)
What drug reduces suicidal ideations?
AE
