5.11 Flashcards
(24 cards)
What are the 4 different types of technologies used in aircraft displays?
Cathode ray tube (CRT)
Light emitting diode (LED)
Organic light emitting diode (OLED)
Liquid crystal display (LCD)
What are the major components of the Cathode ray tube?
Electron guns
Electron beams
Focusing coils
Deflection coils
Anode connection
Masks for separating beams
Phosphor layer
Close up of the Phosphor coated inner side of the screen
What are the three basic colour in a Cathode Ray tube (CRT)?
Red
Green
Blue
If one colour is not showing up what may be the cause of the issue?
Electron gun may be the issue as you need three separate guns for each colour.
What colour does red and blue make?
Magenta
What colour does green and blue make?
Cyan
What colour does red and green make?
Yellow
For large blocks of colour like weather and artificial horizon the electron beam is deflected to produce what?
A Raster on the screen
At what temperature of the tube will the raster shut down?
70 degrees centigrade
If the raster is shut down a stroke scan will still be preformed as the symbols remain but at what temperate will the symbols also disappear?
90 degrees centigrade
What are the advantages of the CRT?
Coloured multifunctional display
What is the seven segment display used for?
numbers and a limited number of symbols
Which technology requires a Backlight?
LCD
Which technology doesn’t require a Backlight?
OLED and LED
What is the main difference between LED and OLED?
In an OLED a carbon film sits inside the panel before the glass screen
What are the disadvantages of the LCD?
temperature sensitive - the fluid can freeze
Viewing angle is limited
how many colours filters are there on top of an LCD?
three
How do LCD’s work?
Liquid crystal displays are not light sources but they do control light, they reflect light while parts of the display absorb it.
What is needed for an LCD to function?
since they don’t radiate light they must use an active backlight or be used in lighted areas.
What are the advantages of LED’s?
Small
Robust
long Life time
What are the disadvantages of LED’s?
High current consumption
Limited flexibility
What does CRT stand for?
Cathode ray tube
What does LED stand for?
Light emitting diode
What does LCD stand for?
Liquid Crystal Display
