5.1.10 Acids and Bases Flashcards
(10 cards)
What does the numerical value of Kc tell you about the position of the equilibrium?
Equilibrium lies to the right.
Define an acid.
Proton donor.
Define a base.
Proton acceptor.
Define a strong acid.
Dissociates 100% in aqueous solution.
Define a weak acid.
Only partially dissociates in aqueous solution.
How do you work out Ka?
10^-pKa
What happens when an acid is added to water?
The acid dissociates releasing H+ ions into solution.
What needs to happen for proton transfer to take place?
Water must be present, so that water can accept the H+ from its conjugate acid.
Define a strong monobasic acid.
Completely dissociates in solution.
If a strong monobasic acid completely dissociates in solution, why does this then help us work out the pH value?
Because this means that the concentration of H+ is equal to the concentration of the acid and this can be used to calculate the pH value.
