What happened in Marchant v Charters?

A

A large house converted into a bedsit, house keeper came in daily to clean it. He tried to protect his rent by registering it under the rent act. Owner did not like this and served a notice to quit.
HELD: the question is whether or not his an occupier as a licensee or a tenant. Licensee.

A

The occupier is a lodger if the landlord provides attendance or services which require the landlord to exercise unrestricted access to the premises. Unless you can exclude the world you have a licence
