Q

Define coalescing?

A

The bringing together of fine particles of entrained water to form large droplets that fall out of the fuel by gravity

Q

What is the purpose of separator elements?

A

Repels the coalesced water droplets that were too small to fall out by gravity

Q

Coalescing element (what is it made of)?

A

Pleated paper element encased by fiberglass wrappings.
Fiberglass is held by in place by a cloth sleeve.
Flow through coalescent is inside to outside.

Q

Separator element (what is it made out of)?

A

Consist of perforated inner brass core cover with a 200-mesh, monel and teflon-coated tape.
Screen is also enclosed also by an aluminum screen.
Considered permanent unless damaged.
Flow is outside to inside.

11
Q

Filter inlet chamber?

A

Fuel flow starts at the inlet chamber.
Dome-shaped to make a flow to get to all of the coalescent elements.
Fuel passes through tube sheet into coalescent elements in the fallout chamber.

12
Q

Fallout chamber?

A

Largest of the three chambers.
Allows the coalescent water to fall out of the fuel stream by gravity as it flows from coalescent elements to separator elements.
Both elements are installed in this chamber.
Also contains manhole cover, filter vent line, and water receiving sump.

13
Q

Filter vent line?

A

Installed at the top of the fallout chamber.
Fitted with a bulls eye sight glass.
2 shutoff valves.
One-way check valve that directs fuel back into the contaminated settling tanks.
Filter is vented until a solid stream of fuel is observed in the sight glass.

15
Q

What is the pressure drop limit?

A

15psi or whatever is stated on the manufacture packing.

16
Q

The context of samples are recorded where?

A

Operating log.

17
Q

Filter hydraulic control system?

A

Safety device on all filters.
Drains water automatically from the filter sump.
Shuts off filter flow if too much water is present and can’t be drained.

18
Q

What are the 4 hydraulic control valves and their location in the filter hydraulic control system?

A

Supply, vent, pilot, auto. water

19
Q

Auto shutoff valve?

A

Opened by filter discharge pressure.

20
Q

What controls the opening and closing of the auto shutoff valve?

A

Pilot valve and an educator.

21
Q

Auto water drain valve location?

A

Water drain line from the sump.

22
Q

What is the ball float designed to do?

A

Float on water and sink in JP-5.

23
Q

What positions does the rotary control valve operate?

A

Down
Horizontal
Up

24
Q

What are the four ports of the float operated control valve?

A
  1. Vent to the water drain line on discharge side of the auto drain valve.
  2. Port to the top of the pilot valve.
  3. Port to the top in the auto water drain valve.
  4. Supply connection port on top of rotary control valve inside filter vessel fitted with wire mesh strainer.
25
Q

What does the rotary control valve control?

A

Opening and closing of the auto water drain and pilot valves.

26
Q

X-75 float tester does what?

A

Mechanically operates the float control valve which makes the auto drain valve to open and close.

27
Q

When is the X-75 float tester performed?

A

During refueling stations and flushing evolutions.

28
Q

With float in down position the 3 valves are in what position?

A

Pilot valve- open
Auto shutoff valve- open
Water drain valve- closed

29
Q

With float in horizontal position the 3 valves are in what position?

A

All are open

30
Q

How many chambers are there and what are the names?

A

Filter inlet chamber
Outlet chamber
Fallout chamber
