Is any device 100% efficient?

A

Not many machines are 100% efficient and energy in rareky equals energy out as some of the energy is wasted in heat.

The EXCEPTION to this is electrical heaters as they are 100% efficient because all electricity is converted to useful heat energy

Consider COST EFFECTIVENESS V EFFICIENCY

A

Energy efficient bulbs are more expensive than normal bulbs but last longer.

LED bulbs are even more efficient than ow energy bulbs and can last even longer.

However, they don’t give out as much light as the other two types of bulbs.

Sometimes WASTE ENERGY can actually be useful. Give an example of this.

A

HEAT EXCHANGERS reduce the amount of heat energy that is lost.

It does this by pumping cool fluid through the ESCAPING HEAT.

This fluid gains heat energy and the heat energy in the fluid can be used again.

Heat from a car engine can be used to transfer air to the air that used to warm the passenger compartment.

What are the pros and cons for using either a battery radio or a clockwork radio?

A
  1. Both do not use mains electricity.
  2. Batteries can be expensive but powering a clockwork radio is free.
  3. Battery power can run out unless you have spare batteries. You don’t get that problem with clockwork radios.
  4. Annoying to have to wind up radio but don’t do this with battery power.
  5. Clockwork better for environment

A company is deciding whether to install a 720 w low power heater or a high-power 9kw heater.

The heater they chose will be on for 30 hours each week. Their electricity provider charges 7p per kWh of electricity.

How much money per week would they save by choosing the low power heater.

A

Weekly electricity used by the low-power heater = 0.720 kW x 30h = 21.6 kWh

Weekly electricity used by the high power heater = 9kw x 30h = 270 kWh

Total saving = (270 - 21.6)x 7 =£17.39

A

Fridges keep food frozen so it doesn’t go off.

Fridges keep vaccines cold.

Hospitals operate machines that saves lives (MRI, X-Ray, Heart Monitor, Respirator etc). Without this life expectancy would be much lower.

Communications are affected by a lack of electricity - no internet, no mobiles
