1

What is a magnetic field?

A

A region where magnetic materials such as iron and steel and wires carrying a current experience force.

2
Q

Describe how the magnetic field works with a wire and how it changes when more bends are made.

A

The magnetic field is concentric - when the wire is bent the circles reinforce each other at the centre to produce a stronger field.

Q

How does a wire’s magnetic field affect magnets in a uniform magnetic field?

A

The magnetic field can affect the magnetic field of another coil or magnetic, producing a force on the wire.

Q

What is the motor effect?

A

A rectangular coil of wire is placed in a uniform magnetic field where the two fields interact to cause a force on the wire.

Q

How does a commutator work?

A

The split ring commutator causes the new wire to be in the position of the old wire, meaning that the current switches so the coil can rotate continuously. Otherwise the force would have to reverse.

Q

How are motor effects used in devices?

A

An axle is attached to the coil and an object is attached to this such as…
A fan.
Wheels for electric cars.
Platters for hard drive disks or DVDs.
Used in washing machines or fridges or vacuums.
