Q

What is refraction

A

When light passes from one medium to another, the light rays bend because the speed of light travels at different speed in different mediums

Q

What is apparent depth?

A

Light reflects off object and bends away from the moral and it exits from water to air
Our eyes can’t account for this so they extend the refracted rays back until they cross creating a virtual image

Q

What is the index of refraction?

A

The ratio of speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in another medium
It’s unit less

Q

What is total internal refraction?

A

When the incident angle passes the critical angle resulting in the refracted eat not exiting the medium but instead reflects back into the medium causing the light to be trapped inside

Q

What two conditions must be present for TIR to occur?

A

Light must travel from a more dense to less dense medium

Q

What is a converging lens and what is another name for it?

A

Thicker in the center then the edges causes parallel light rays to converge to a single point.

17
Q

What is farsighted and what lens can you use to correct it?

A

Hyperopia. Can see far objects but not close objects, light rays are being focused beyond the retina. To correct use a converging lens

18
Q

What is near sighted?

A

Myopia. Can’t see far but can see up close because space between retina and lens is to large. Light is converging before the retina. To correct use a diverging lens

19
Q

Name four parts of the human eye and how they function

A

Iris- coloured part of the eye and helps regulate amount of light entering
the eye
Pupil- dark center missing in iris, works with iris to help change the amount of light entering the eye
Optic nerve- takes electrical impulses to the brain
Lens- focuses light Ray onto the retina.
