Chapter 6 Flashcards

1
Q

What is the difference between dynamic and static equilibrium ?

A

Dynamic - the forward and reverse reactions occur at the same rate

Static - there us no motion between reactants and products

Q

At equilibrium describe the rate of forward and reverse reactions , entropy and Gibbs free energy .

A

Forward and reverse reactions are equal
Entropy is maximum
Gibbs free energy is a minimum

Q

What does it mean when the reaction quotient Q is less than , equal to or greater than Keq? What about their respective Gibbs energy ?

Q

What are the four properties of the law of mass action ?

A
  1. Concentrations of pure solids and liquids do not appear in the reaction
  2. Keq is temperature dependent
  3. Larger Keq is farther to the right equilibrium position
  4. If equilibrium constant is Keq in forward direction , it’s 1/Keq in reverse

Q

What is the difference between kinetic and thermodynamic product ?

A

Kinetic - higher in free energy than thermodynamic products and form at lower temperature , proceed faster

Thermodynamic - lower free energy and more stable, proceed slower
