Organ Systems Flashcards
What does the circulatory system (also called cardiovascular system) consist of?
The heart, blood vessels (eg arteries, veins, and arterioles), and blood
What does the circulatory system do?
Supports the circulation and distribution of various substances throughout the body, including oxygen, hormones, and nutrients from food
Circulatory system’s relationship with other organ systems: endocrine system
Hormones released from the endocrine system influence blood pressure
Circulatory system’s relationship with other organ systems: urinary system
Urinary system helps regulate blood volume and pressure by adjusting urine volume
Circulatory system’s relationship with other organ systems: nervous system
Nervous system controls the blood pressure, heart rate, and distribution of blood to various parts of the body
Circulatory system’s relationship with other organ systems: estrogen
In women, estrogen helps preserve vascular health
Circulatory system’s relationship with other organ systems: integumentary system
Integumentary system allows heat to escape by dilating superficial blood vessels
Circulatory system’s relationship with other organ systems: skeletal system
Blood cells are formed in the marrow of the bones in the skeletal system
What does the digestive system consist of?
All the organs from the mouth to the anus involved in the ingestion and breakdown or processing of food
What organs are on the path from mouth to anus that are involved in the digestive system?
Esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, rectum, and anus.
How does the digestive system get nutrients from food?
It manufactures enzymes that break down food so that the nutrients can be easily passed into the blood for use throughout the body.
Where does the absorption of nutrients occur in digestive system?
In the small intestine
What does the small intestine consist of?
Duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.
(Digestive system) After nutrients is absorbed what does colon do?
Removes water from the waste that remains
What other two organs are involved in the digestive system?
Liver and pancreas
(Digestive system) what does the liver do?
It produces bile that helps break down fats
(Digestive system) what does the pancreas do?
Delivers enzymes to the small intestine to aid in digestion
Digestive system’s relationship with other organ systems: skeletal muscle
Increased skeletal muscle activity increases the motility of the gastrointestinal tract
What purpose does the endocrine system serve?
Serves to control body functions. Glands secrete hormones that travel through the blood to organs throughout the body
Which glands in the endocrine system regulate processes such as growth and metabolism?
Pineal, pituitary, thalamus, hypothalamus, thyroid, thymus, and adrenal
What organs have endocrine functions even though they are part of other systems?
Pancreas, ovaries, and testis
Endocrine system’s relationship with other organ systems: lymphatic system
Lymphatic system provides a means of transportation for some hormones
Endocrine system’s relationship with other organ systems: muscular system
Muscular system provides protection for some endocrine glands
Endocrine system’s relationship with other organ systems: nervous system
Controls the secretion of hormones from the pituitary gland
What does the integumentary system consist of?
Skin, mucous, hair, nails, and membranes
What functions does the integumentary system have?
Protects internal tissue from injury, waterproofs the body, helps regulate body temperature, and serves as a barrier to pathogens
Integumentary system’s relationship with other organ systems: respiratory and digestive systems
Provide oxygen and nutrients to the skin to help it remain healthy
Integumentary system’s relationship with other organ systems: cardiovascular system
Oxygen and nutrients for the skin tunnel through blood vessels in the cardiovascular system
Integumentary system’s relationship with other organ systems: lymphatic system
Lymphatic system picks up excess fluid from the skin to avoid swelling
Integumentary system’s relationship with other organ systems: skeletal system
Skeletal system provides shape and support
Integumentary system’s relationship with other organ systems: endocrine system
Hormones from endocrine system regulate hair growth and hydration
Integumentary system’s relationship with other organ systems: reproductive system
Skin protects internal organs, including those in the reproductive system
