What is an acid?
acids are ionic compounds that break apart from water to for H+ IONS
How do you determine the strength of an acid?
By the amount of H+ ions within the solution. the H+ ions the stronger the solution.
What are the properties of a dilute solution of acid?
There is only a small amount of H+ ions in the solution and the acid is not very corrosive.
What happens when acids dissolve in water?
They release hydrogen ions (H+) when they dissolve in water.
What are the two main types of acids?
Organic acids and mineral acids.
What are organic acids?
They are acids that are made by living thing’s.
What are mineral acids?
They are acids made by minerals.
What are some examples of organic acid’s that are in our food’s?
There is lactic acid in yoghourt, acetic acid in Vinegar and Tartaric acid in wine and grapes.
What are the three main acids that we use in the school laboratory?
They are Hydrochloric acid, Nitric acid and Sulfuric acid
which one is generally much stronger, mineral or organic acid’s?
Mineral acids are generally stronger
How can acids become drinkable?
That there is so few H+ ions that it no longer has it’s corrosive effect.
What are bee and ant stings?
they inject formic acid into the body. treat with a base like baking soda. this will Neutralise the acid.
what are wasp and jellyfish sting’s?
they inject very strong base into the body. treat with an acid solution like vinegar to neutralise the base.
What happens when you combine and acid and a base together in one solution?
They will react and neutralise, making a type of slat and water.
What is indigestion?
indigestion is the rising of acid in you stomach. there is to much acid, so it goes up into the oesophagus where it burn the lining.
