GCP-BioPsy: Localisation of Function Flashcards

1
Q

What’s the term used to to describe certain areas of the brain thought to be responsible for particular functions? e.g. vision, language, coordination.

Q

Draw a brain from side view (left), and label the following: Motor cortex, Somatosensory cortex, Auditory cortex, Visual cortex, Broca’s area, Wernicke’s area.

Q

What does the somatosensory cortex do?

A

The somatosensory cortex processes information about touch, pain, temperature and proprioception (the position of your body).

Q

What connects the two hemispheres of the brain?

A

The two hemispheres of the brain is connected by the corpus callosum.

Q

What functions are dominant in the left hemisphere of the brain?

A

The left hemisphere of the brain handles the bulk of language functions because in most people, Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas are only found in the left hemisphere. The left hemisphere is also generally responsible for logic, analysis and problem solving.

Q

What functions are dominant in the right hemisphere of the brain?

A

The right hemisphere is concerned with things like spatial comprehension, emotions and far recognition.

Q

How do the two hemispheres of the brain communicate?

A

The two hemispheres of the brain communicate through the corpus callosum. It does this by passing through the corpus callosum.

Q

In general, which hemisphere deals with information from the left side of the body?

A

The right hemisphere (e.g. Information from the left visual field goes to the visual cortex in the right hemisphere).

Q

What is the only treatment available for very severe cases of epilepsy?

A

The only treatment available for very severe cases of epilepsy is split brain surgery, which severs the corpus callosum.

17
Q

What’s the main side effect of split brain surgery?

A

The main side effect of split brain surgery is that information can no longer move between the two hemispheres.

18
Q

Scientists have used split brain surgery patients to study the different roles of the two hemispheres (e.g. Sperry’s study 1968). Describe the method, results, conclusion and evaluation of Sperry’s 1968 study.

A

See p.g. 83 of GCP.
