  1. The mind is made up of a Self and subparts that form an inner family.
  2. Parts emerge to keep the personal functional and safe or to maintain control of inner and outer worlds.

Theory of Dysfunction in Internal Family Systems:

A
  1. Parts are forced into extreme roles by unhealthy circumstances (exiles, managers, or firefighters)
  2. Parts do not trust the Self, so keep the pain of Exiles out of awareness and use Managers and Firefighters to control the family.
  3. Unable to heal when parts are exiled or unintegrated.
