Handout Flashcards
Chemistry
Study of Matter, It’s composition, structure and Properties. The changes the matter undergoes. The energy accompanying these changes.
Mass
measure of how much matter is in an object
Weight
Measure of the gravity on the object
Gas
Random arrangement of particles. No definite Volume. No definite Shape.
Liquid
Loosely bound particles. Definite Volume. No definite shape.
Solid
Repeating pattern. Definite Volume. Definite Shape.
Evidences of Chemical Change
Evolution of gas (bubbles)[When Mg is combined with an acid]. Release of absorption of energy ( heat and light)[ when Mg is burned]. Formation of a precipitate (a solid substance that settles at the bottom when two liquids are combined)[when barium chloride BaCl2 is combined with sodium sulfate Na2SO4). Color change ( also seen during physical change.)
Atom
Smallest particle of an element
Molecule
2 or more atoms in a definite ratio
Elements
Composed of one kind of atom. Monatomic, diatomic.
Compounds
More than one kind of atom.
Mixtures
2 or more substances, each of which retain its individual properties. maybe of two different elements, element and compound or different compounds.
Methods of Separation 1
Magnets, iron from sulfur
Methods of Separation 2
Filtration, separating solid and liquid parts of a mixture as they pass through a filter/screen.
Methods of Separation 3
Mix of liquids or liquids and solids are separated by differences in boiling points. Distillation
