  • old merchant or naval ships which were no longer seaworthy but could still float safely in a harbour
  • they were used because prisons became full

Describe the conditions on hulks

A

Conditions were terrible
•ships were overcrowded and cramped-not enough space to even stand up
•prisoners packed so tightly that diseases(typhoid, dysentery, cholera) spread easily and treatable illness was ignored
•hulks were dark and rat-infested
•food an water given to prisoners was likely to be contaminated with human waste
