Why did large numbers of people start moving to towns and cities in the eighteenth century?
- because of industrial revolution
* production in Britain moved to large scale factory instead of experienced workers making items on a smaller scale
Why were some people forced to turn to crime as a result of the industrial revolution?
•in more rural areas, the variation to farm life left many workers without proper work to support their families
What was the bloody code?
The Bloody Code was a list of crimes punishable by death
-included over 200 separate capital offences
Give examples of the bloody code
- being out at night with a blackened face
- being on the company of gipsies for a month
- general poaching
- pick-pocketing
Why were executions held in public?
•to discourage and refrain those that were watching, to do certain actions or behaviours

What were hulks?
- old merchant or naval ships which were no longer seaworthy but could still float safely in a harbour
- they were used because prisons became full
Describe the conditions on hulks
Conditions were terrible
•ships were overcrowded and cramped-not enough space to even stand up
•prisoners packed so tightly that diseases(typhoid, dysentery, cholera) spread easily and treatable illness was ignored
•hulks were dark and rat-infested
•food an water given to prisoners was likely to be contaminated with human waste
How many prisoners died on hulks?
2000 out of 6000 prisoners died on hulks between 1776 and 1795
