Imprisonment
Offender is held in prison for a set amount of time where they are seperated from the rest of society so they cannot cause any more harm
Fines
Offender is required to pay a set amount of money
Home detention
Offender must remain at home for a set amount of time and if they leave the house they are sent to prison
Community service
Offender is required to work for a community organisation for a set amount of time
Bonds
Offender must meet certain requirements e.g. Attend a rehabilitation centre. Failure to do so results in further punishment
Actus reus
( guilty act) the prosecution must prove the offender committed the crime voluntarily
Men’s rea
Guilty mind- the prosecution must prove that the accused committed the crime with intent negligence or recklessness

Law
Rule set in place by the governments that must be obeyed or punishments will be applied

Guideline created by and organisation e.g school that is enforced by them alone and has no legal backing

Tradition carried on by generations of people for enjoyment and has no consequential backing for not following
