Station One: Flashcards

Q

Child with Gastro needing IV or NG hydration:

When do we decide what form of hydration to use?

A

We decide what form of hydration to use after assessing the degree of dehydration
If mild to moderate we use NG if severe IV
We asses hydration by urinalysis, skin turgor, assess mucosa membrane, sunken fontenel (signs of dehydration)

we don’t give sugary drinks because it draw up water from the body into the gut therefore the child may become more dehydrated
