Q

What are enzymes?

A

Enzymes are biological catalysts which speed up chemical reactions, but remain unchanged themselves.

Q

What is the specific?

A

Specific is the term used to describe the fact that one enzyme can work on only one substance.

Q

Can enzyme reactions change the activity site of enzymes?

A

Enzyme reactions could change the activity site and make it harder for substrates to fit and the enzyme won’t work as well.

Q

Does the enzyme return to its original state after the chemical reaction?

A

Yes! The enzyme returns to its original state (not enzyme - substrate complex) after the completion of the reaction.

(Induced Fit)

Q

Describe the effect of temperatures on the function of an enzyme?

A

Temperatures hotter than 37 C decrease the activity of an enzyme and make it less effective.

Q

Describe the diagram of enzymes

A

It starts out with an enzyme and a substrate that each have a shape. The active site is where the the substrate fits into the enzyme.

Then the enzyme grabs onto the substrate.

Then the products (substrate split in half) + enzymes are released from each other’s connection and the enzyme returns to the original state as it was in the first step.
